SAQA/SDA Conference, March 2010

This past week I was fortunate to be able to attend the joint Studio Art Quilt Associates/Surface Design Association “Reinvention” Conference in San Francisco.  I went up a day early to attend a SAQA Representatives’ meeting and have dinner with my fellow reps at Judith Content’s home in Palo Alto.  I knew we were in for a colorfest when I saw her front entry:

The catered meal was fabulous, and the weather was in the seventie’s, permitting us to sit in Judith’s backyard to mingle and eat our Asian-influenced meal.

The next two days were filled with lectures and slideshows presented by museum curators, university professors, magazine editors, and textile artists. One day several of us took a side trip to visit the San Jose Museum of Quilts and Textiles.  On Sunday, we were escorted across the Bay to Oakland and then to Emeryville, where we visited the studios of four textile artists.  One of the dyers is Karen Livingstone, and here is a shot of her studio.  When asked where she lived, she said, “Up those stairs.  That’s my kitchen!”  Envious?  I think so.

So I came home tired but refreshed, with my head filled with provoking thoughts and creative ideas for my next project(s).
