Cosmic Gears accepted into Rituals Exhibit

Exciting news this week!  My art quilt, Cosmic Gears, was accepted into the annual juried invitational exhibit put on by Dinner at Eight Artists Jamie Fingal and Leslie Tucker Jenison.  This is their fourth year organizing this exhibit, and I have been fortunate to be in each one so far.

I was originally going to do an abstract of the Air Force Academy graduation “hat toss,” but the mockup was boring.  So I went through my travel photos and searched online to find the exact meaning of a “ritual.”  When I discovered Robbie Davis-Floyd’s quote, “To perform a series of rituals is to feel oneself locking onto a set of ‘cosmic gears’ that will safely crank the individual through danger to safety,” I remembered a photo in my collection of the Eiffel Tower elevator gears.

The resulting piece is a wholecloth print of that photo, turned on its side, color adjusted in Photoshop, and run through a filter.  It was quilted with monofilament thread to emphasize the ink and watercolor look I was going for.

The exhibit is scheduled to debut at the Long Beach International Quilt Festival this summer, then travel to the IQF in Houston in the fall.  The 40 artists included are most grateful to the sponsors of this exhibit, Moore’s Sewing Centers and Havel’s Sewing and to Dinner at Eight Artists for giving us the opportunity to share our work with thousands of viewers.
